Ritchie Bros. Sells More Than $172 Million of Equipment at Global Auction in Orlando

This year’s unreserved auction on Feb. 15 to 19 attracted more than 9,850 bidders from 79 countries.

 Wayne Smith, Wayne’s Backhoe Service, is hoping to buy an 80,000-lb. excavator to take back to North Carolina. Ronnie Benning (L) and Perry Boyd of Boyd Utility Boring came to the auction looking for an excavator — and there were many to choose from. Ray Delange came all the way from Canada looking for a good deal on an excavator. This Volvo loader was getting detailed with fresh paint in Ritchie’s paint shop before it was put on the lot. This is a package that’s available to all of Ritchie’s consignors prior to a sale.  Walt Boring (L) of Boring Equipment and George Russell of Russell Engineering were looking over some of the new equipment at the auction. The excavator sale gets under way. All makes and models of skid steers roll over the auction ramp. Self-serve customer kiosks are available for all bidders. Caterpillar 770 rock trucks are ready to be auctioned off. Dan Schmoldt of DRS Enterprises is a utility contractor from Garfield Heights, Ohio. Caterpillar articulated trucks are set to go to the highest bidders. Gan Jia (L) and Leyao Ye, both of SANY America Inc., came from Peachtree, Ga., to check out the sale.

Thousands of registered bidders pack the arena to participate in the Ritchie Bros. sale. Day one included more than 120 skid steers.
 Ray West of Rumford, Maine, said that this Cat skid steer looks “wicked good” and would like to take it back home with him. This father and son travel to the annual Ritchie auction in Florida every year to look for equipment to update their fleet for their contracting business. Father and Son, Jerry Wilcox Sr. (R), owner of Wilcox Excavating, South Windsor, Conn., and Jerry Wilcox Jr. had their sights set on this Cat D6 dozer.  Jerry Sr. said, “I’m not leaving this sale without it!”

Buyers from around the world visited Ritchie Bros.' 200-acre Orlando, Fla., site for the year's largest equipment auction. In just five days, Ritchie Bros. sold a record 10,700-plus items for more than $172 million.

This year's unreserved auction on Feb. 15 to 19 attracted more than 9,850 bidders from 79 countries. Out-of-state buyers purchased more than $137 million of equipment (80 percent), including more than $40 million purchased by out-of-country buyers (23 percent).

“Orlando is one of our flagship operations — and it's clear from the results this week equipment buyers and sellers value the solutions we provide,” said Ravi Saligram, chief executive officer, Ritchie Bros. “We're very pleased to have been able to help 985 consignors sell equipment this week, including both end-users and dealers. Due to the diverse buying audience we attract from different sectors and geographies, we achieved consistent and solid pricing all week through most asset classes, with particularly strong results for low-hour, late-model, well-maintained equipment. I am very proud of our team's efforts in conducting a world-class sale.”

Bidders participated in the auction in person, online in real time at rbauction.com, and by proxy. Online buyers purchased more than $64 million of equipment (38 percent). All items were sold without minimum bids or reserve prices.

“This is not just a U.S. auction; this is a global event with participation from around the world,” said Terry Dolan, president (U.S. and Latin America), Ritchie Bros. “People travel from across the globe to attend this auction, and thousands more participate online from as far away as Belgium, Costa Rica, Colombia, Vietnam, and more.”

Ritchie Bros. sold equipment and trucks from all the top manufacturers, including Caterpillar, Volvo, John Deere, Komatsu, Terex, Grove, JLG, Kenworth, Peterbilt, Freightliner, International and more. Equipment sold included:
