Riverside Sand Co. Inc. has been selling mortar sand, fill dirt and topsoil for more than 25 years.
The company, based in Wallace, N.C., has 15 employees and does most of its work on a 200-acre mine site.
However, in late May, Riverside Sand Co. decided to expand its operations to include recycling asphalt and concrete.
After doing research, the company purchased a used IROCK RDS-15 horizontal impact crusher, also known as a rapid deployment system.
“We wanted to move into the portable recycling asphalt and concrete to expand our business,” Wade Norris, vice president of Riverside Sand Co. said. “Because we’re very new to this business, we bought a used model IROCK RDS-15 horizontal impact crusher from a company in Raleigh. We just needed something quick and liked the set up of the older IROCK RDS-15. It is a 1996 model.”
The used RDS-15 needed some repairs so Norris called IROCK’s Valley View, Ohio, branch.
He spoke with Sean Donaghy, IROCK’s sales manager, who has more than 18 years experience in the crushing business.
“I liked how the RDS-15 we bought was set up so I went online and did a little research,” Norris said. “I called Sean for parts and he said he had those in stock. The price was right.”
As the two were discussing how to repair the older RDS-15, Norris decided on the spot to buy a new RDS-15.
“Wade and I had built up a relationship when he first called up with service parts questions,” Donaghy said. “He bought the used RDS-15 and wanted to purchase parts for it. After he purchased parts, we started talking and that is when he bought the second from me. I think by buying parts, he felt comfortable with us to buy a new machine.”
By the end of June, Norris drove to IROCK’s headquarters in Ohio.
He arrived Thursday at 6 p.m. and IROCK attended to his needs right away.
“We got him hooked up and, by Friday morning, he was gone,” Donaghy said.
Norris indicated that Riverside Sand Co. hopes to keep the new RDS-15 busy while having the old one ready as a backup or if the company has two jobs.
“IROCK was very considerate and helpful,” Norris said. “We got in late and they went out of their way to see we were satisfied.”
