Rodman Digs Deep on Dallas Development

Rodman Excavation was subcontracted to excavate the basement for the Victory F&H Residential and Commercial complex located just one block south of the American Airlines Center in downtown Dallas, TX.

The 714,000 sq. ft. complex will consist of seven floors and house up-scale condos, restaurants and retail stores.

When completed, the excavation was 35 ft. deep by 150 ft. wide and 660 ft. long with the removal of approximately 30,000 cu. yds. of surface dirt and more than 90,000 cu. yds. of limestone and shale. The subcontract amounted to approximately $1 million in excavation and material recycling.

“We were awarded the contract by Fairfield Development of Dallas because we had a very competitive bid and they knew our reputation for completing jobs on time if not sooner,” stated Jamie McNair, vice president of Rodman Excavating. “With our fleet of equipment, which is mostly Caterpillar and our reputation for keeping our equipment maintained on a constant basis, Fairfield knew there would be little or no downtime.”

The project was started in mid May and was finished before the end of June. Rodman services its equipment –– which is in excess of 500 units –– each evening, if a unit is on the job, with its 10 service and lube trucks so there will be no service time during the main working hours.

“Once the surface material was removed, we moved a crew onto the project including a Cat 345 excavator, 963 track loader and the new Cat 988G loader with a IronWolf crusher attachment,” said McNair. “The operation is quite efficient in that the 988G with the IronWolf crusher grinds the rock while the 963 track loader removes the material for the 988 and the 345 excavator loads it into trucks.”

Rodman used some of the initial rock to form a four acre temporary parking lot for the rest of the construction site.

McNair said that, according to Holt CAT, Rodman Excavation is one of its largest customers in Texas.

“We found that keeping our equipment limited to just a few brands enhances our ability to maintain our service and parts inventory and even though we have exemplary service from Holt CAT, we perform much of the repair and maintenance ourselves since we have trained service technicians and over 35,000 square feet of shop areas in our 2 facilities located in Frisco and Austin, Texas,” McNair stated. “We are also pretty particular about the different attachments that we use on our machines, but when David and Rusty Griffis of R&D Equipment in Oklahoma demonstrated the IronWolf crusher attachment on a 966 rubber tire loader, we purchased it and also contracted to have one on our 988G.

“The IronWolf carries its on power pack, a Cat C16 engine mounted on the back of the loader,” McNair continued. “We can take the IronWolf and actually create our own base material in multiple sizes, which really saves money for Rodman and our customers since it is recycled on the job site or crushed so more material can be loaded into dumps for easy transport to other job sites.”

Rodman Excavation has enjoyed increased growth since its inception more than 15 years ago. The company is noted for completing jobs efficiently due to its work ethic and the desire to do the job right the first time, and for its ability to have the right equipment at the right time.

The company has grown to more than 1,000 employees and is looking forward to further expansion at a paced rate.
