Schmidt Equipment hosted an open house Sept. 14 at its new location in Billerica, Mass.

After more than 20 years in its previous location on Republic Road in Billerica, Schmidt had outgrown the facility. Coupled with the addition of the Wirtgen Group product lines, the company needed more space for equipment displays, larger repair facilities and additional parts warehouse space. Business has been growing and Schmidt needed more capacity to better serve its customers throughout eastern Massachusetts and surrounding areas.

After an extensive long search, Schmidt found an appropriate piece of land in the same industrial park where it had been located and acquired the property in early 2015. The balance of 2015 was devoted to planning, design and town approval processes.

Site preparation began in early 2016, with major land clearing and site preparation done by contractor Pitt Pipeline of Billerica, which handled the complete job, including cuts and fills, storm water management systems, all excavation, underground utilities and paving. The steel erector installed the approximately 19,000-sq.-ft. building in late 2016, and a number of subcontractors handled the fit up and mechanicals for the 11,000-sq.-ft. service shop area, 4,000-sq.-ft. parts warehouse, and 4,000-sq.-ft. office area.

Compared with Schmidt's previous location, the company has more than tripled its capacity in all areas. With eight oversized shop bays and two 10-ton overhead cranes, an oversized wash bay, and other specialized resources, it is now able to service much larger "production class" excavators, loaders and dozers from John Deere and Hitachi. In addition, its largest Wirtgen milling and recycling machines easily fit in the service area, along with Vogele pavers and Hamm compaction rollers.

Schmidt Equipment is a full-line, full-service dealer of Wirtgen, Hamm, Vogele, John Deere, Morbark, Hitachi, Interstate Trailers, Big Tow Trailers, Paladin Attachments, FFC, Sweepster, CP, JRB, GEM, Woods Construction, Viking Plows, Craig Manufacturing, TAG Manufacturing and Indeco. It currently has five locations throughout the state of Massachusetts in Oxford, Springfield, Swansea, Billerica, and Plymouth.
