The newest addition to Chicago’s McCormick Place convention center will have 250,000 sq. ft. of meeting space and 470,000 sq. ft. of exhibition space when it opens in 2008.

McCormick Place is already the largest convention center in North America and the addition will increase its floor space by 33 percent.

Twenty-two JLG boom lifts rented from Illini Hi-Reach are being used by Danny’s Construction Company Inc. (DCCI) of Gary, IN, to help erect the building’s steel framework. Thirty thousand tons of steel will have been used when the job is finished and DCCI is erecting the project at the rate of 600 tons per week.

“DCCI insisted on JLG boom lifts with SkyWelder welding systems for the job. The boom lifts have platform heights up to 135 feet and incorporate a Miller Electric 280-amp stick welder,” said Jerry Lodovisi, the Illini Hi-Reach representative on the job. “It’s one of the reasons why they are erecting steel so quickly. If I were an ironworker, I’d insist on a JLG boom lift with a SkyWelder package too.”

JLG Industries Inc. is one of the world’s leading producers of access equipment and highway-speed telescopic hydraulic excavators. The company’s product portfolio includes JLG aerial work platforms; JLG, SkyTrak, Lull and Gradall telehandlers; Gradall excavators; and an array of complementary accessories.
