Georgia Utility Contractors Association Inc. (GUCA) recognized and awarded the 2019 Golden Pipe Engineering Award to Matt Smith of Carter and Sloope Engineering firm, Canton, Ga., at its recent Fall Quarterly Meeting and Trade Show in Atlanta, Ga.

This award was nominated by Harris Stokes of Crawford Grading & Pipeline Inc. for the water main upgrades for Ga. Hwy 219. "The engineers worked very well with us, the owner and the DOT contractor to ensure we stayed ahead of the construction of the road project," Harris stated. The project bid on Sept. 7, 2018, is 100 percent complete, and consists of installation of 8-in. water main for a partially GDOT passing lane project and new mains to replace the existing water system. Major components of the project included 22,000 LF of 8-in. DIP C-350; 25 fire hydrants; 435 LF of cased jack and bores; 60 service transfers and 1,200 LF of 8-in. TR-Flex DIP installed by horizontal directional drill through solid rock, and numerous connections to the existing water system.

"This award was created several years ago to give recognition to an engineer or engineering firm that understands the complexity of the utility construction industry and works with utility contractors in making sure plans and specs meet the requirements set by their customers [the owners] of the project and are implemented so that projects can be built in a safe and timely manner," said Vikki Consiglio, GUCA executive director. "This world of ‘set it and forget it' doesn't really work too well on construction projects. That is why it is so important for engineers to work with utility contractors. We want to recognize those individuals and firms who actually go over and beyond their everyday job description to help make this happen. Carter and Sloope is one such firm."

Georgia Utility Contractors Association Inc. is a nonprofit state trade association located in metro Atlanta representing more than 400 contractor and affiliated firms statewide. GUCA represents the workforce that supplies, installs and rehabilitates the infrastructure of water, sewer, gas, electrical, telecommunications and other underground utility systems for the public and private sector including pipe and plant installation.
