Stone Rhinos Put Tough Jobs on Endangered List

For tough compaction jobs, Stone Construction Equipment Inc. has introduced its Rhino vibratory dirt rollers. Operators can choose from three heavyweight machines in either smooth, padfoot or padfoot with optional knockdown blade configurations. Each is packed with the power, impact and performance for every job.

For confined-area compacting, Rhino 43- and 54-inch (109 and 137 cm) rollers, powered by a 58-horsepower (43 kW) John Deere engine, pack 12,000 pounds (5,443 kgs) of centrifugal force. For large projects there’s the Rhino 66 inch (168 cm) with a 108-horsepower (81 kW) Perkins water-cooled engine. This 66-inch (168 cm) dual amplitude machine can pound any job down to size with up to 28,249 pounds (12,814 kgs) of force.

The l0-ton (9 t) Rhino 66 offers the quality features of larger machines but at a 6-ton (5.4 t) roller price. It features a high-quality, reliable ZF no-spin differential axle and heavy-duty Eaton hydraulic components. A combination of the latest in engine technology and the “positraction-effect” of the axle gives the roller the power and torque to easily climb the steepest grades. Dual speeds give the roller added maneuverability.

Standard features of the Rhino 66 include removable ROPS/FOPS, an extra-large cooling system, 50-gallon (189 l) hydraulic and fuel tanks.

The Rhino 66 has a full instrumentation panel that includes self-diagnostic gauges and warning lights to monitor machine and engine performance. The easy-to-read panel is highly visible from the operator’s seat.

The at-a-glance convenient gauges display measurements in both imperial and metric systems. The engine feedback gauge cluster includes dual-purpose gauges that monitor engine temperature, engine oil pressure, the charging system and voltage, and fuel level. A center instrument light cluster signals warnings from the corresponding feedback gauge.

Gauges in the center of the instrument panel display roller performance — an engine tachometer, the eccentric speed and an hour meter. The right side of the panel features the machine warning lights. These include: hydraulic return filter dirty; hydraulic transmission system filter dirty; hydraulic eccentric system filter dirty; engine air filter dirty; hydraulic oil/tank temperature; and e-stop on.

All vital engine and hydraulic system functions can be monitored at the instrument panel which provides at-a-glance operating status and routine service reminders. Corresponding engine service points are located under the hood of machine. The battery and radiator are easily accessible from the operator compartment.

Snap-Tek plug-to-plug components are used to connect the instrument panel and the control console to the main electrical harness. The Snap-Tek system makes electrical fault finding and servicing easier. There’s no need for complicated rewiring, the electrical components merely snap together.

The Stone Rhino 66 features an easy-access, ergonomic operator control console with a 4-in-1 control lever. The heavy-duty drive lever puts all the machine’s drive controls at the operator’s fingertips. It includes forward, reverse and neutral drives along with a vibration button.

A blade lever to raise and lower the optional knock-down blade along with the engine throttle lever are also on the console. Easily accessible are the high/low eccentric amplitude selector switch and the high/low travel speed switch. Also on the console, within easy reach, is the e-stop button which quickly disengages the transmission pump and engages the brake, immediately stopping any movement of the roller, while keeping the engine running.

The Rhino 66 is designed with increased serviceability features to reduce overall cost of ownership. The lift-up fiberglass hood provides maximum access to the engine compartment and all hydraulic system components. Pumps and filters, along with the fuel and hydraulic fill caps, are located at the rear of the compartment for easy access. Routine servicing is fast and easy.

The innovative, contoured hood easily lifts with an assist from air shocks. Built into the hood and the ROPS cover is a unique labyrinth design that maximizes airflow so the engine runs cooler for a longer life. The fiberglass ROPS cover houses the air intake vents and access to the radiator fill cap. The ROPS/FOPS is also easily removable for additional maintenance access or for transport to and from job sites.

Corresponding engine service points are all located under the hood of machine, except for the battery compartment and access to the radiator. Access to both are easily gained from the operator compartment. The warning lights are backed-up with sight gauges located on the eccentric and hydraulic filters. A service technician, while working in the engine compartment, can also easily see when filters are dirty and require changing.

Should the drum or the front frame components ever require servicing, that too has been designed to be done in a minimum amount of time. The front scraper bars are modular and are easily removed and replaced. The front bar can be unbolted from the frame sides and the drum can be easily uncoupled and rolled away from the frame; unlike many other machines that require difficult and time-consuming lifting of the drum out of the frame.

The operator’s platform is ergonomically designed for operator comfort, easy operation and high visibility. The safety-seat with flip-up armrests and a seatbelt is adjustable three ways. Convenience features include a cup holder, an operator manual compartment and an additional slot that holds the radio-frequency remote control transmitter for the Stone Bulldog trench roller.

All three sizes include tires and drums matched for optimum compaction in any condition. Diamond-tread turf tires work with the smooth drum to move smoothly across granular soils. Tractor-type traction tires and the padfoot drum grip best on cohesive soils.

Standard features of the Rhino 43 and 54 sizes include a positraction drive system, 35-degree articulating and 9-degree oscillating frame, roll over and falling object protection and complete instrumentation gauges.

Stone Rhinos also lower overall lifetime costs with serviceability features that reduce downtime and maximize uptime. Features like extra-large hydraulic tanks, maximum access to all service components, same-day parts response and no parts minimum help to keep the Rhino on the job, not in the shop.
