Bergkamp Inc., based in Salina, Kan., offers a new swing auger system as an option for its FP5 flameless pothole patcher to provide more flexibility in pothole repair. The swing auger system delivers asphalt material in a wide 8.7-ft. (2.6 m) swing that ranges from the driver’s side wheel track past the passengers side wheel track for repair of shoulder, curb and gutter deterioration. This replacement for standard material chutes allows for precise and continual placement of asphalt so small crews can easily fix many potholes from one truck location without difficult handwork, according to the manufacturer.

Retrofit kits are available for current owners of the FP5.

Bergkamp’s truck-mounted pothole patcher reduces material waste with its insulated 5.1-cu.-yd. (4 cu m) electric-heated hopper that keeps asphalt at a constant temperature and pliable for an extended period of time. Potholes repaired using the FP5 have an increased life over the “throw and roll” method, according to the manufacturer.

The damaged area is removed and squared off using the pavement breaker. The air and tack wand blows out any remaining debris and applies the tack coating, which helps bind the new asphalt to the existing pavement. The swing auger delivers the fresh hot asphalt to the prepared area and the compactor then consolidates the material evenly with the existing pavement.

The FP5’s electric-heat system, powered by an onboard hydraulic-powered AC generator, provides more consistent heat to the material in the hopper and minimizes potential safety problems associated with propane or heating oil. The thermostat allows the temperature to be set to match the material being transported. The system can be plugged into an external power source to keep material at the proper temperature overnight or over a weekend — reducing material waste and allowing the unit to be filled at the end of a day when the line at the asphalt plant is shorter, according to the manufacturer.

The swing auger, spoils bins and tools can be easily accessed from the back or curbside of the machine so the operator can safely reach them without stepping into traffic. A hydraulic lift platform lowers the pavement breaker and plate compactor (or optional single-drum roller) from transport position to ground level — reducing the risk of back injury.

In addition to the swing auger system, Bergkamp offers other options for its FP5 pothole patcher, including: a sand spreader attachment, a secondary auger motor, LED lights, a single-drum vibratory roller, traffic cone and shovel holders, asphalt lutes and a front cleaning fluid hand sprayer.

Bergkamp Inc. has been manufacturing pavement maintenance equipment since 1980. It offers a full line of truck-mounted, trailer-mounted and continuous slurry seal and micro surfacing pavers and equipment, as well as pothole patching equipment. Bergkamp’s headquarters and manufacturing facility is located in Salina, Kan., with an additional sales office in Waco, Texas.
