Telsmith Inc., a manufacturer of mineral processing equipment, took part in Manufacturing Day Oct. 5, 2018, by inviting students from local schools to visit its facility in an effort to connect future generations to careers in manufacturing.

“We see the importance of partnering with our local schools to support our youth in hopes of developing a more skilled labor force,” said Brian Taylor, director of manufacturing, Telsmith Inc. “We enjoy working with the students and promoting all that manufacturing has to offer.”

Manufacturing Day (MFG Day) was created to address common misperceptions about manufacturing by giving companies an opportunity to open their doors and show, in a coordinated effort, what manufacturing is — and what it isn't.

A total of 110 students from three local schools; Badger Middle School, Webster Middle School and Port Washington High School attended this event.

The day started with a presentation about manufacturing, careers in manufacturing and an overview of Telsmith and the history of the company. The students were then instructed about proper safety at the facility, handed safety glasses and hearing protection, then taken on a shop tour, where they enjoyed seeing large scale manufacturing taking place.

The day ended with a Q&A session where students could ask members of Telsmith questions about manufacturing. The panel included welders and erectors/assemblers, as well as machinist Brian Taylor of Telsmith Inc. and Matt Haven, president of Telsmith Inc.

“Taking part in events like Manufacturing Day and having continued local support of our schools and secondary educators will make a positive impact on careers in manufacturing,” said Taylor.
