Construction Equipment Guide

The Canadian Woodland Forum’s Demo International tradeshow was the backdrop for Terex Fuchs to demonstrate two of its log handlers, the Terex Fuchs MHL464 and Terex Fuchs MHL460. Using precut logs, Terex Fuchs showed both the nimble maneuverability and versatility of the MHL464 pick-and-carry log handler and the power and production of the MHL460.

The Terex Fuchs MHL464 log handler is designed to optimize the balance between high productivity and quick maneuverability at the yard. The rear boom positioning on the handler’s upper carriage maximizes lift and reach capabilities without the need for outrigger stabilizers. The 84,878-lb. (38,500 kg) log handler features powerful lifting capabilities across the entire operating range.

The MHL464 delivers a standard reach of 36 ft. (11 m). Inverted hydraulic lifting cylinders mounted on the machine’s 26.9 ft. (8.2 m) box-type boom minimize exposure to debris and moisture to reduce maintenance and maximize machine uptime. Its 15.4-ft. (4.7 m) dipperstick can be equipped with up to a 3.8-sq.-yd. (3.2 sq m) grab to maximize the number of logs carried at one time. The MHL464 at Demo International was equipped with a 3.8-sq.-yd. pulpwood grapple, designed for efficient log loading.

The M4L464 offers flexible mobility via standard all-wheel steering and a compact design for effectively maneuvering through narrow aisles at the log yard. With a maximum 30-degree steering angle, the machine delivers a tight, 19.6-ft. (6 m) turning radius. An efficient hydrostatic travel drive system coupled with a two-speed power-shift drive gear offers travel speeds of up to 3.7 mph (6 kmh) in low and up to 12 mph (20 kmh) in high. Eight-fold, 14.00-24 pneumatic tires, oscillating rear axle and intuitive ergonomic controls enable the MHL464 to nimbly navigate terrain while optimizing operator comfort, according to the manufacturer.

Additional MHL464 log handler features include:

• Standard 11.8-ft. (3.6 m) front-mounted blade for enhanced stability and path cleanup (optional rear-mounted support blade is available upon request)

• 221 hp (165 kW) turbocharged diesel engine

• Maximum 169 gpm (640 Lpm) hydraulic capacity

• Joystick steering and steering direction reversal as standard features

• Upper carriage with central greasing point and automatic central lubrication

• Hydraulic dampening system for traveling under load

• Rigid-mounted cab with standard elevation of 13 ft. (4.0 m) at eye level

• Air-cushioned comfort seat

• Standard air conditioning and hot water heating with four adjustable defroster nozzles

Also on display at the show, the Terex Fuchs MHL460 log handler features a wide undercarriage design with four large outriggers and stabilizer support beams to maximize lift capacities and productivity. With multiple reach and attachment options, the MHL460 provides lifting capacities regardless of machine configuration, according to the manufacturer.

With a fuel efficient, 221-hp (165 kW) turbocharged diesel engine, the MHL460 develops plenty of power to tow fully loaded trailers around the yard, allowing more logs to be transported at one time for enhanced productivity. Large pneumatic tires, high performance axles and a purposefully designed transmission and drive motor enhance traction, drivability and towing capability. The hydrostatic drive system offers first and second gear travel speeds of up to 3.7 mph (6 kmh) and 12.4 mph (20 kmh) respectively.

Flow-on-demand control of the hydraulic system delivers efficient maneuvering of the upper carriage and fast cycle times, so more logs can be loaded in a shorter period of time. To meet specific job site requirements, the MHL460 can be equipped with three reach lengths — 41 ft. (12.5 m); 44.3 ft. (13.5 m); or 49.2 ft. (15.0 m). A variety of logging grabs can be fitted to the dipperstick, offering up to a 2.2-sq.-yd. (1.7 sq m) capacity. Also available are the optional 1.25 cord pulp wood grapple and live heel loading equipment and stabilizer specifically designed for handling longer wood logs.

The MHL 460’s ergonomically shaped operator’s cab features large windows, providing enhanced visibility around the machine. The variable, hydraulically height-adjustable cab offers an eye level up to 19 ft. (5.8 m). Its air-cushioned seat includes pneumatically adjustable lumbar support, an integrated headrest, arm rests and optional seat heating for enhanced operator comfort. With a multi-position steering console, the column can be adjusted to match individual operator comfort requirements.

Standard air conditioning, hot water heating and four adjustable defroster nozzles allow the operator to effectively control the climate inside the cab, no matter the external weather conditions.

Additional features of the MHL460 include:

• 4-point outriggers with individual controls

• Limited slip axles

• Automatic central lubrication system for the upper carriage

• Maximum 169 gpm (640 Lpm) hydraulic capacity

• Xenon working floodlights mounted on the dipperstick and cabin

• Pneumatic four-fold, 20.5 R25 tires

• Optional live heel loading equipment with 41-ft. (12.5 m) reach
