The Parking Spot will provide a value-added parking option for Salt Lake City International Airport fliers. The privately-owned, near-airport parking business is designed for the comfort of air travelers who want a more efficient way to park their cars and get to their flights in an efficient and timely manner.
Groundbreaking for the Parking Spot, located at 123 South, 2400 West, was held in April of this year. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2018.
The Salt Lake City Parking Spot is about 2 mi. from Salt Lake City International Airport, just off Interstate 80 and Interstate 215 in the Salt Lake Valley. Travelers can take either freeway to access the Parking Spot location.
The Parking Spot Salt Lake City is part of a fast-growing enterprise.
Since being founded in 1998, the Parking Spot has grown to be the leading near-airport parking company in the United States. In addition to having 39 airport parking lots at 22 airports, the Parking Spot focuses on hospitality to provide travelers with easy, comfortable and affordable airport parking experiences.
Covering 33 acres, The Salt Lake City Parking Spot will offer covered parking as well as shuttle service. It will provide 720 canopy-covered and 1,337 uncovered parking spaces, which will be lined and identified with the corresponding space number, which the company refers to as a spot number.
“To help guests identify where their vehicle is located, we distribute ticket stubs with the row and spot number on them, or they can download our mobile app, which includes a car locator feature,” said John Lyon, senior vice president of development and acquisitions for The Parking Spot.
The project's development team includes Big D Construction of Salt Lake City as general contractor and Kimley Horn Associates of Raleigh, N.C., as project engineer and architect.
Big D Construction is well-versed in a variety of construction specialties. The company constructs buildings for food storage, healthcare, schools, light commercial use, offices, manufacturing, stores, federal and state facilities, warehouses, hospitality use, multi-family projects and industrial, mining and historic renovation use.
It also is experienced at constructing public spaces.
The Parking Spot project is not the Big-D's first project connected to the Salt Lake City International Airport. Big D Construction also is part of a joint venture making major improvements at the airport.
The airport serves an estimated 20 million passengers annually. That figure will continue to increase as more people move to Utah and as more businesses set up shop in the state.
To keep pace with the demand, the Salt Lake City Department of Airports, along with Salt Lake City, have embarked on a 10-year, $3.1B project to replace the current Salt Lake City International Airport with a new airport that highlights Utah's beauty, while cutting down on energy costs.
Construction on the first phase of the project, the Airport Redevelopment Program, began in the summer of 2014. Big-D Construction teamed with Holder Construction of Atlanta to create Holder–Big-D, A Joint Venture.
Plans for the Airport Redevelopment Program Project call for a new long-term parking lot, new rental car facilities consisting of new quick turn around and new service buildings; new terminal and concourse; new 3,600 stall parking structure; new central utility plant; new apron paving, taxi lanes and taxiway intersection lighting; extensive site and utility work including removals; lift stations; demolition of existing airport facilities; and sustainable design to achieve LEED Gold certification.
Construction on the Airport Redevelopment Program is expected to be complete in the fall of 2024.
The Parking Spot Salt Lake City designer Kimley-Horn is one of the nation's premier planning and design consulting firms. With more than 3,000 staff members in more than 80 offices across the United States, the firm offers full services in a wide range of disciplines.
Equipment currently in use at the Salt Lake City Parking Spot project site includes graders, bull dozers, cranes, Gradall excavators, concrete trucks and asphalt pavers.
About 30 workers are on duty daily at the construction site.

Rates at the Parking Spot are 17 percent to 40 percent lower than what on-site airport parking lots charge.
Shuttling
Efficient shuttling is an important part of the Parking Spot. Shuttle teams will meet guests at their parking spot, assist them with their luggage and take them to the terminal. Shuttles will arrive every five to seven minutes at the terminal and when the travelers return to Salt Lake City, the shuttles will take guests directly to their vehicles.
The shuttle fleet will consist of seven shuttles.

Car wash services range from handwashes to the ultimate detailing. The Parking Spot washes the car while the owner is traveling.

The Parking Spot is designed for energy efficiency. It is a Gold Medal Partner of GBTA's Project ICARUS and is recognized by the Green Building Certification Institute. The business is committed to sustainability and providing eco-friendly options for its guests and employees.
The Parking Spot has committed to a goal of installing EV charging stations at facilities to ensure that customer demand is adequately met as well as a national recycling program at all locations and corporate headquarters.
The facility will make use of LED lighting and is designed to provide natural filtration of storm water runoff.
Shuttle Saves Money
By riding one its shuttles on that last leg to the airport, The Parking Spot has saved travelers about 11.3 million mi. annually when compared to private cars and taxis. This saves over 6,000 tons of emissions which would require 31,000 trees to offset those emissions.
The Parking Spot will bring 33 new full-time jobs to the Salt Lake City market when fully launched.
