Thompson Tractor Company Opens Tuscaloosa Branch

More than 500 people, including customers, local government and civic leaders, special guests and employees, were on hand Oct. 23, 2003, for Thompson Tractor Co.’s ribbon cutting ceremony at it’s new Tuscaloosa store.

The 60,660-sq. ft. facility, located at 3550 Black Warrior Parkway, features a main office with a parts counter, a parts warehouse and shop building.

The main shop has 16 service bays for earthmoving equipment, truck and lift truck repair and a wash rack. The shop has four 10-ton top-running cranes in the earthmoving area and two 5-ton top-running cranes in the truck area.

A separate 9,760 sq. ft. utility building has separate bays for welding, painting, hydraulics and track repair. The wash pad is adjacent to the utility building. The main equipment display area is in the front of the building along Black Warrior Parkway.

Thompson Tractor Company has operated a store in Tuscaloosa since its founding in 1957, and this new location is the company’s third in the area. After 36 years in business, the Skyland Boulevard location is now closed. The original Tuscaloosa store was located on Greensboro Avenue.

Headquartered in Birmingham, AL, Thompson Tractor is the full-service Caterpillar dealer for Alabama and northwest Florida. Thompson operates four divisions:

• Thompson Tractor Co. sells and supports the full-line of Caterpillar earthmoving, construction, paving and forestry equipment, as well as forestry equipment from Timberking, Riley and LogMax;

• Thompson Lift Truck Co. sells and supports Caterpillar, Mitsubishi and Crown and other allied material handling equipment in Alabama and northwest Florida. In addition, Thompson Lift Truck is the Caterpillar lift truck dealer for all of Georgia except the nine counties in the northwestern corner of the state;

• Thompson Power Systems sells and supports Caterpillar diesel engines used in electric power generation, marine propulsion and on-highway truck applications;

• Thompson Cat Rental Store rents and sells the full line of Caterpillar compact construction equipment as well as a wide selection of construction and light industrial equipment from allied vendors.
