Construction Equipment Guide

Lifting specialist Transdata is making a major contribution to the renovation of the National Mane Garrincha Football Stadium in Brasilia, federal capital of Brasil, which will play host to a series of FIFA World Cup matches in 2014. Once complete, the capacity will be increased from 41,000 to 70,064 and the stadium will be the second largest in Brasil.

Following a comprehensive engineering study, material handling specialist Transdata chose a 661 ton (600 t) capacity Terex CC 2800-1 crawler crane to help construct the stadium’s environmentally friendly rooftop, which incorporates photovoltaic cells capable of generating all the power required by the new venue.

The rooftop structure is made of concentrically placed steel rope rings that will be tensed from load bearing structures on the sides of the stadium. The cover will be made out of canvas and incorporate photovoltaic cells.

One of the tasks of the CC 2800-1 crawler crane is to lift the 32 ton (29 t) steel wire rope sections and position them in the tensioning devices. Employing the vario adjustable superlift system with 197 ft. (60 m) main boom and 236 ft. (72 m) luffer, the crane is expected to remain on site for five months.

The crane was transported to the new stadium from Barra Dos Coqueiros, a municipality of the state of Sergipe, where it was working on a wind farm. Transported in 30 trucks, it took a team of two Terex technicians and five Transdata personnel just five days to rig.

Sustainability

One of the highlights of the action plan is the concern given to the environment. In order to achieve this, sustainability interventions start with the workers. Reservoirs with chemical substances are placed in concrete tanks, so that if there are any kind of leaks, the soil will not be compromised.

Another sustainability feature is the stadium’s rooftop, which will have photovoltaic cells to capture sunlight up to 2.5 megawatts per day, corresponding to all the energy necessary for running the venue. During the building process, 81 trees were taken out. In compensation, the construction company donated five thousand seedlings of different species to the federal district government. Finally, the seats will be made with recycled plastic bottles.

Transdata’s Lifting Manager, Gilvanir Fidencio, said: “This important, national project demanded a high capacity crane of proven design offering a high degree of maneuverability and reliability. The confined features of the site itself were also a factor.

“The CC 2800-1 has met our expectations and is operating satisfactorily on a day-to-day basis. This is vital on a time critical project of such national importance and prestige. Feedback from the site has been consistently positive, both in terms of productivity and the ease of use of the intuitive Terex IC-1 crane control system.”

About the Terex CC 2800-1

The Terex CC 2800-1 can be converted from a standard crane to a special-purpose crane for wind turbine projects — and back — with only a few special components. These special components include specially reinforced main boom segments and a rigid luffing fly jib (LF2) with a length of 39, 78 or 118 ft. (12, 24, or 36 m) that was developed specifically with wind power-related applications in mind. The crane’s rated lifting capacity is 661 tons (600 t) with a reach of 33 ft. (10 m), while its maximum load moment is 8,500 tons (7,710 t.)

The undercarriage is available in two different models: the standard version and a narrow-track version, the latter allowing the crane to move through 16 ft. (5 m) wide roads. The narrow track kit can be used with either 3.9 ft. (1.2 m) track pads (for a smaller total width) or 4.9 ft. (1.5 m) wide track pads (for reduced ground pressure). In addition, the crane also can be supplied with a chassis designed for road travel. The basic machine, including all winches and the A-frame, can be transported within a 13 ton (12 t) axle load limit.

The high level of flexibility provided by these options and features saves time and money during transportation, setup, and disassembly, providing for a high level of cost-effectiveness in the process. Moreover, the time-tested Terex IC-1 control system, featuring remote radio control capabilities, makes it possible to operate the Terex CC 2800-1 easily, safely, and comfortably in almost any operating condition, according to the manufacturer.
