VDOT Invites Innovators to Second Hackathon, Idea Jam in Northern Virginia

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) invites developers, planners, futurists and data enthusiasts to its second installment of the SmarterRoads Hackathon and Idea Jam Series on Tuesday, July 17 and Wednesday, July 18 at 1776's Crystal City Campus, located at 2231 Crystal Drive, #1000 on the 10th floor, Arlington, Va. 22202.

Featuring VDOT's open data sets and the SmarterRoads.com data portal, participants can submit concepts and solutions to help address Virginia's greatest transportation needs. Winning teams in six categories will receive over $2,500 in cash prizes, mentoring sessions and opportunities to present concepts at future workshops:

Hackathon: 1st Place:

  • $1,000 cash prize
  • Executive mentoring experience
  • Opportunity to pitch concept at a future workshop

Hackathon: 2nd Place:

  • $500 cash prize
  • Executive mentoring experience
  • Opportunity to pitch concept at a future workshop

Idea Jam: Resiliency:

  • Cash prize or prize package valued at $250 or greater

Idea Jam: Safety:

  • Cash prize or prize package valued at $250 or greater

Idea Jam: Vulnerable Road Users:

  • Cash prize or prize package valued at $250 or greater

People's Choice:

  • Cash prize or prize package valued at $250 or greater
  • Opportunity to pitch concept at a future workshop

The first hackathon was held in Virginia Beach, where dozens of participants collaborated, developed and presented ideas on paving data, infrastructure inventory, and applications that reward driving distraction-free.

VDOT plans to hold two additional events in the state later this year.
