Vermeer Manufacturing Company’s D20x22 Series II Navigator horizontal directional drill meets utility contractors’ needs to adjust to changing grades, confined spaces, and varying soil conditions.
Powered by an 83 hp (62 kW) Kubota turbocharged diesel engine, the unit provides 2200 ft.-lbs. (2,983 Nm) of torque for turning cutting tools and pulling large backreamers. With 20,000 lbs. (9,072 kg) of thrust/pullback, the D20x22 Series II provides the performance to complete a wide range of bores.
The standard AutoDrill feature monitors changing soil conditions and adjusts the bore or pullback speed as necessary. Rotation, thrust and pullback pressure can be pre-set. The Auto Resume function allows slurry and cuttings to mix by starting rotation before thrust/pullback resumes — reducing the risk of stuck bores.
The D20x22 Series II can work in varying conditions from solid rock to soft soil. The D20x22 Series II is compatible with the Rock Adaptable Terrain Tool (RATT) system.
RATT offers operators the ability to drill and steer through many soil conditions without the need for specialized machines. The tool can be drilled and steered using less torque than conventional drag cutting tools, therefore causing less vibration, optimizing cutting action and helping operators improve efficiency.
Vermeer equipped the D20x22 Series II with 10-ft. (3 m) forged one-piece Firestick rods that feature enhanced bend radius and threads designed specifically for directional boring. The rod carrying capacity is 350 ft. (107 m).
At less than 75.6 in. (192 cm) in height, the D20x22 Series II offers a low profile design providing better side hill stability and ease of transport compared to taller competitive models. A hinged, one-piece hood provides easy access to the engine and vital components during maintenance.
Like other Vermeer drills, the D20x22 Series II is configured with fingertip controls mounted on two joysticks within the ergonomically designed operator’s station. The D20x22 Series II features a minimal amount of micro switches, reducing the exposure of electrical components to moisture and cold weather.
