Waste Management hauls more than two million tons of soil a year out of its Bile Island Facility in Morrisville, PA. The facility is responsible for providing structural materials for cell construction at GROWS and Tullytown Landfills in Bucks County, PA.

“Our facility is responsible for ensuring that the landfills have enough material to keep up,” said Tim French, Waste Management maintenance manager, GROWS and Tullytown Landfills. “We deal with a large number of trucks on a regular basis, and our equipment has to be able to keep up with that demand.”

The facility’s management recently decided to update part of its equipment fleet to keep up with truck traffic with the purchase of a new Cat 980G wheel loader with a 5.5-cubic-meter (7.25 cu. yd.) bucket. The new machine replaced an older Cat 988 wheel loader with a 6.5-cubic-meter (8.5 cu. yd.) bucket that the company had for a number of years.

French explained why the company chose a Cat 980G wheel loader from Giles & Ransome, a Caterpillar construction equipment dealer based in Bensalem, PA.

“Along with Giles & Ransome, we were able to study our production and operation requirements. Based upon that information, sales representatives from Giles & Ransome were able to size the proper loader to meet our production requirements while reducing fuel, maintenance and operational costs. It was truly a win-win situation,” French said.

According to French, the wheel loader also offers a number of other benefits.

“The cab in the new machine has been updated and enlarged, which offers increased comfort for the operator,” French explained. “The biggest advantage, though, with the new machine is our strong working relationship with Giles & Ransome.”
