DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) Construction to convert a century-old Alabama school building into apartments could begin next year.

The Dothan Eagle reported plans to turn the old Howell School building into apartments for seniors have been in the works since the property was rezoned in 2015.

Architect Joe Donofro told city officials he hopes construction will start in early 2018.

Architect Robert Byington of Studio 8 Designs in Valdosta, Ga., is leading construction of two new buildings planned to add more apartments at the site. He told the Dothan Historic Preservation Commission the brick, roof and windows of the new buildings will match the 1903 school as much as possible.

The Dothan Planning Commission is scheduled to take up the project. It would need final approval by the Dothan City Commission.
