Equipped with a pair of 15-19.5 6-ply tires on a hydraulically actuated lift, the rolling packer with hydraulic lift from ICON Industries allows the operator to pack a wide range of surfaces; then lift the entire 60 by 93-in. (152 by 236 cm) drum off the ground for greater ease of turning, moving and/or loading the unit for transport.
“The wheel lift system certainly isn’t designed for transporting the packer from job to job,” explained Jamie Meier, sales manager of ICON Industries. “However, the hydraulic lift system provides the perfect solution when it comes to backing the unit onto a trailer or simply moving it around the job site. Contractors who frequently work on both sides of existing paved roads have also shown a tremendous amount of interest in this particular model. They can simply raise the packer and move from one shoulder of the road to the other without damaging the pavement or having to lay down boards to protect the surface.”
The lift system features a 5 by 24-in. (12.7 by 61 cm) hydraulic cylinder, .75-in. (1.9 cm) hoses rated to 4,000 psi, and wheel hubs and spindles rated at 15,000 lbs. (6,804 kg) each.
Overall length of the unit with the wheels raised to the work position is 18 ft., 8 in. (5.7 m); yet, overall width is 101 in. (256.5 cm), meeting the legal transport width in most states and communities.
Like the conventional ICON rolling packer, the hydraulic lift rolling packer features elliptical teeth that allow for increased speed and a higher percentage of pack with less chipping. The 9-in. teeth, which feature a 6 by 3-in. (15 by 7.6 cm) base, also allow deeper penetration, while the three-by-three tip provides 9 sq. in. (58 sq cm) of bearing surface and 259 psi of compaction — 419 psi when the drum is filled with water. Teeth cleaners that work in both directions, as well as high-speed drum bearings, also are standard equipment.
For those who require a smooth drum without teeth, the rolling packer with hydraulic lift system also is available with a smooth roller that provides 75 psi pressure when empty, or 168 psi when the drum is filled with water. As an option, both configurations can be equipped with a front leveling blade for smoothing the work surface ahead of the drum.
